Demonstrates the diamagnetic Meissner effect of a superconductor (magnetic repulsion).
Equipment:
1. Superconductor disk 2. Plastic tray 3. Block of styrofoam 4. Neodymium magnet (.25” circle) 5. Plastic tweezers 6. Liquid nitrogen in dewar
CAREFUL -- DON'T LOSE THE SMALL NEODYMIUM MAGNET.
Procedure:
1. Set up equipment as shown below. 2. Pour LN2 on top of superconductor disk. 3. Wait until disk is cooled to LN2 temp. 4. Place neodymium magnet on top of disk. 5. Spin the small magnet with tweezers to show that it is floating. 6. Keep disk cooled during demonstration by pouring more LN2 over disk.
