Shows the superconductor effect on a thick copper disk.
Equipment:
1. Syrofoam container 2. Large copper disk 3. Superconductor disk 4. Small neodymium magnet cube 5. Tweezers for spinning small magnet 6. Large neodymium magnets (set of 4) 7. 12" metal ruler 8. Dewar of liquid nitrogen (bldg 4)
CAREFUL--DON'T DROP THE HEAVY COPPER DISK & DON'T LOSE THE SMALL NEODYMIUM MAGNET.
Procedure:
1. Pour liquid nitrogen over the large copper disk as it sets in the syrofoam container. 2. Drop large magnet onto copper disk from a height of about 6". 3. Drag the magnet (with the small end of the magnet parallel to the copper disk) across the copper disk. Place this magnet on the end of a metal ruler & try to hit the copper disk. 4. Cool the superconductor w/ liquid nitrogen on the copper disk & put the small neodymium magnet on top. Using the tweezers, carefully spin the small magnet.
