Description:
Shows that liquid oxygen is attracted by a strong magnetic field.
Equipment:
1. Tripod
2. Holder for 2 neodymium magnets w/ 2 small metal beads.
3. Metal funnel (closed off)
4. Foam insulator
5. Liquid nitrogen
6. Option: Video camera (large) & monitor (to show to large class) OR Pasco Univ. Incandescent light source (w/out lens) & HBS power supply to shadow project on paper screen (put tripod on styrofoam block instead of styrofoam background).
Procedure:
1. Set up as shown.
2. Fill funnel 1/4 full with liquid nitrogen.
3. As oxygen condenses on outside of funnel it will drip down between the two magnets.
4. Observe magnetic attraction of the oxygen as shown in the diagram.
