Demonstrates paramagnetic attraction and diamagnetic repulsion of several samples on the overhead projector.
Equipment:
1. Pivot base and swing arm 2. Paramagnetic and diamagnetic sample set of small bottles (stored in box) 3. Large 1" neodymium magnet w/ handle 4. Overhead projector (check if in room)
Procedure:
1. Place pivot base and swing arm on the OHP w/ the arm push pin on the pivot base thumbtack. 2. Place two samples on the pivot arm as shown. Focus the OHP as needed. 3. Hold magnet very close to a sample but not touching it. There will be an attraction of cupric sulfate and a repulsion of water. Try other samples provided: carbon, rubber stopper pieces, aluminum strips, sulfur, plastic tubing. NOTE-Be sure the push pin stays on the thumbtack.
